Mass Audubon, founded in 1896, is New England's largest nature-based conservation organization. The organisation protects over 43,000 acres of land across Massachusetts through direct conservation work and operates a network of 112 wildlife sanctuaries and partner properties that provide public access to natural spaces.
The organisation's work spans four main areas. Environmental education reaches 50,000 students annually through school programmes and nationally recognised adult education offerings. Land protection and habitat restoration form the core of its conservation mission. A grassroots advocacy programme mobilises 10,000 advocates to influence environmental policy. These efforts are supported by a membership base of 160,000 people.
Mass Audubon addresses three principal challenges: biodiversity loss, inequitable access to nature, and climate change. The organisation emphasises inclusive and equitable access to greenspaces, particularly in urban environments, and integrates principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and accessibility throughout its operations.
